What is Needle in a Haystack?
"Looking for a needle in a haystack" is the oldest way to describe a hopeless search. This game takes the phrase literally. Every round we generate a fresh haystack straw by straw — from 100,000 straws on Easy up to 5,000,000 on Insane — and hide a single steel needle somewhere inside it. Some straws lie on top of the needle, so even when you are looking straight at it, it is only partly visible.
Your job is simple to explain and hard to do: find it and click it. The timer starts the moment the haystack appears.

How to play
- Move: drag the haystack with your mouse or one finger. Arrow keys work too.
- Zoom: scroll the mouse wheel, pinch on a touchscreen, double-click, or use the + and − buttons.
- Grab: when you see the thin silver needle with its little eye, click or tap it.
- Stuck? After 30 seconds you can use a hint. It circles the area around the needle, but adds 30 seconds to your time.

How hard is it really?
On Normal, the needle takes up roughly one twenty-thousandth of the haystack. Zoomed all the way out, it is invisible. Zoomed in far enough to see it, you are looking at a tiny fraction of the field at a time. The skill is in balancing the two: scan fast enough to cover ground, but slow enough that your eye still catches the needle. Our tips page explains the lawnmower pattern that most fast players use.

Is Needle in a Haystack free to play?
Yes. The game runs entirely in your browser, costs nothing, and needs no download, account, or plugin.
How many straws are in the haystack?
Easy has 100,000 straws, Normal has 1,000,000, and Insane has 5,000,000. There is always exactly one needle.
Can I play on my phone?
Yes. Drag with one finger to move around and pinch with two fingers to zoom. Tap the needle when you see it.
Why can't I click the needle when zoomed out?
From far away the needle is thinner than a pixel. You have to zoom in close enough to actually see it before you can grab it — that is the whole challenge.

Is there a new haystack every day?
Yes. The Daily Haystack hides the needle in the same spot for every player, and a new one starts at midnight UTC.
