Needle in a Haystack

Needle in a Haystack Tips: Find It Faster

Finding the needle is not luck. Players who search with a system beat players who wander around, and it is not close.

1. Pick your zoom level once and keep it

Zoom in until you can see individual straws as separate lines and the colours stop blending into one gold texture. That is your search zoom. Further in, you cover too little ground per screen. Further out, the needle disappears into the texture. The zoom chip in the top bar shows your level — remember the number.

2. Mow the lawn

Start in the top-left corner. Drag sideways across the full width of the haystack, move down by about 80% of a screen height, then sweep back the other way. The 20% overlap means you never miss a strip at a screen edge. This "lawnmower" or boustrophedon pattern is what real search-and-rescue teams use, because it covers an area exactly once.

3. Look for grey, not shape

Your eye is faster at colour than at shape. Every straw is yellow, gold or brown. The needle is the only cool grey-silver thing in the stack. Do not try to read each straw — relax your eyes, sweep, and stop when something looks cold.

4. Check the edges

The needle can be anywhere except right at the border. People tend to search the middle first and skim the edges, so give the outer ring the same attention as the centre.

5. Use hints wisely

ModeHint worth it?Why
Easy / TimedRarelyA full sweep of 100K straws takes about as long as the 30-second penalty.
Normal / DailyAfter 2–3 minutesIf your sweep has not found it, the circle saves more time than it costs.
InsaneYes, earlyFive million straws is a huge area; the hint cuts it to one small region.

6. On a phone, go fullscreen

Tap ⛶ to give the haystack the whole screen. More visible area per sweep means fewer rows and a faster find.

FAQ

What is the fastest way to find the needle?

Pick one zoom level where straws are clearly visible, then sweep the haystack in straight rows like mowing a lawn, overlapping each row slightly. Random wandering wastes time revisiting the same areas.

Is it worth using a hint?

On Insane, almost always — a hint narrows five million straws to a small circle for a 30-second cost. On Easy, a careful sweep is usually faster than the penalty.
